Services

Couple Counselling Lothian offers a range of services around relationship issues. Our counsellors are carefully selected and highly trained. They receive continuing support, professional development and supervision and have access to a range of professional consultants. In this way we maintain consistent high standards. Counsellors adhere to the ethical standards of BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and COSCA (Counselling and Psychotherapy in Scotland). Sexual and Relationship Therapists adhere to the code of ethics of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists and Family Therapists to the UK Counselling and Psychotherapists (UKCP).

As we offer a number of services, when you contact us, we ask you to come in for an intake interview so that we can recommend the right service for you. The Services we offer are:

Relationship Counselling

Couple counselling offers you a chance to explore your feelings, fears and insecurities through talking, introspection, analysis and reflection and the counsellor works together with both you and your partner to promote better understanding of your relationship and the outcome you both wish to achieve whether it is to stay together, separate or divorce.

Counselling sessions are normally held once a week for about 50 minutes. You see the same counsellor at the same time each week and your counselling continues for as long as you and your counsellor feel it is beneficial.

Sexual and Relationship Therapy

Some people have specific sexual difficulties/dysfunctions and are referred to our Sexual and Relationship Therapists, who are trained to use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to treat specific disorders. However, in order for Behavioural Therapy to be effective clients may need several sessions of relationship counselling to be able to understand the issues and their patterns of relating.

Family Therapy

Family Therapy is available for people of all ages with family concerns. Sometimes worries are to do with conflict, family breakdown, general parenting, step family or extended family issues. Family Therapy interviews can be with one, some or all family members. To read Additional Information click here or to view a leaflet click here

Telephone Counselling

If you are unable to access our offices because of disability, age or geographical location we offer a telephone counselling service for individuals. It is usual to have one face to face interview at the beginning.

Individual Counselling

All of our counsellors and therapists are trained to offer their specialist services to individuals as well as to couples. In individual therapy you will become more aware of yourself as a relational and sexual being, able to recognise your own self worth, feel your self-esteem and be able to assert yourself and your needs within a healthy relationship.

How much does it cost?

Although we receive grant aid from The City of Edinburgh Council and West Lothian Council this covers only around 15% of our annual expenditure.

To cover the balance of our costs, and to keep our service open to all, we are entirely dependent on contributions from our clients. Each intake session costs £29 and this is paid in advance in order to reserve the appointment. Each counselling session costs £60 and wherever possible, this is what we would like our clients to give. Contributions can be made by credit card, cheque (payable to Couple Counselling Lothian) or in cash.

As a charity Couple Counselling Lothian is able to reclaim the tax you have paid on your donations, increasing the value by 25% at no extra cost to you. If you are a UK tax payer all you have to do is complete a Gift Aid declaration form when you attend your appointment.

Some clients may not be in a position to contribute the full £60 per session. We can provide a recommended sliding scale dependent on income.  Please be assured that the service you receive will not depend on the amount you contribute. Couple Counselling Lothian is committed to making counselling accessible to all.

Male CoupleEqual Opportunities

Couple Counselling is committed to a policy of equal opportunities in the provision of its services and employment practices. We offer a telephone counselling service for clients who find it difficult to come to our offices. We have a BSL trained counsellor for clients who have issues around hearing. We are transgender inclusive and open to the uniqueness of every relationship.
